I've explained in the intro to this gallery that I've decided to focus more on 'landscapes in the small'. My first opportunity to focus specifically these intimate landscapes came recently when we had arranged a short holiday in Highland Perthshire. The weather was dreadful - dreich and rainy, without even a blink of sunshine. It wasn’t encouraging for photography but I wandered around the banks of the River Tay near Grandtully and looked for the detail in the landscape.

There is a beautiful old stone bridge across the Tay at Grandtully and it's parapet has a wonderful range of vegetation and lichen. I liked this image because it has a wee bit of context and, strangely, because of the single sycamore seed by the plant in the foreground.

Zooming in to a detail on the bridge, I was lucky to catch a beetle on the leaf. The strange background shape is in out of focus, metal reinforcing bat that runs along the bridge.

Another tiny plant on the bridge - here, I liked the textural contrast between the delicacy of the plant, the old stone and the metal bar.

I found a single quartz boulder on the edge of the river which had a wonderful texture. Here, I liked the softness of the moss against the hard stone.
